Banner Nursery Art

With our third baby girl (who is now a whole month old!), we didn't repaint the nursery.  Mostly it was because I couldn't face the task with our basement finish going on and being pregnant, but I also thought I might be able to work with the blue.  I decided to go with blue, raspberry pink, and white, which is pretty similar to what I already had going on.  I am using this nursery as inspiration.  The whole project is really just getting started, and to kick it all off I made this wall art using the new Detailz Dies from Lifestyle Crafts.

Detailz Dies are cutting dies that cut and emboss in one pass when you use thick paper, plus you can use the die as a stencil.  I used the Banners set, and I love how it turned out!  I also used letterpress paper, which is thick enough to do the cut and emboss at once.  The blue and pink banners are letterpress paper that I covered with washi tape first.  I strung the banners on embroidery floss and added a sweet little initial.  So cute and easy!

Baby Mobile Refashions

Nearly a year after my littlest girl was born, I finally got around to putting a mobile on her crib.  And that's only because my mom already had the frame and animals!  To quickly personalize it for her pennant nursery, we added the ribbon pennants and fabric covering for the arm using leftover fabrics from her quilt and name banner.  It was actually a pretty quick project, and she loves to watch the animals spin around.

In my older daughter's room, we recently moved her into a twin bed, so we had to take her mobile down, as seen in the photo below:

She missed "her birds", so I used the components of the mobile, a 12" embroidery hoop, and some ribbon to create a new bird hanger for her room.

The birds are back!  This was also a pretty quick project, since I already had everything ready to go.  I made a quilt for the new "big girl" room, which I will post next with another quilt that my mom and I finished for my craft room.

Pennant Nursery

What a fun project this room was!  I blogged about it a bit on the way, but I never really summed it all up in a single post.  There are still a couple of things that would be nice to have in there.  Bed skirt and cute mobile, anyone?  If they never happen, it will probably be okay, but if I ever get bored with nothing to do (ha!) maybe I will whip something up.  Well, let's get started on that tour, shall we?

The lovely, awesome quilt was a baby gift from my amazingly talented seamstress, aka my mom.

The circle rug, yellow vase, and sheers are from IKEA, and I made the pennant banner and giant stuffed fish (years ago).

Now for the other side of the room:

I had a lot of fun making those pennant canvases.  They were really pretty easy, too: striped paint background, scrapbook paper pennants, and ribbon for the strings.

This is the art I have on a little forty-five degree wall by the door.  The clipboard is from our wedding reception, and the mini print is from my sister, who got it from The Dreamy Giraffe.  So, there you have it.  I hope you enjoyed seeing another one of our spaces.

Bird-Themed Girl's Bedroom

Hey!  I'm so excited to kick off my summer Home Tour with my daughter's bedroom, arguably one of my most favorite rooms to date.  This is the first room I did in my house, back in late summer of 2009.  Things have evolved a little bit since then, but not much really.  I spent a lot of time thinking about this room while I was pregnant and after my girl was born.  We didn't get into our house until the start of the summer in 2009, and by then my baby was already four months old.  I think the amount of time I had to stew about the design added a lot to the quality of the room in the end.  I still consider this and my other daughter's nursery the most complete rooms design-wise in my home.  Well, let's begin, shall we?

We painted the walls ourselves, using a lot of painter's tape and a bottle of nail polish tied to a string to get the lines straight.  Since we have nine-foot ceilings upstairs, I didn't want the stripes to go all the way to the floor.  We put a chair rail up and left the bottom part plain white, and even though I really wanted bead board, it still looks amazing.  The bedding is courtesy of my mom and awesome Amy Butler prints.  The theme is birds, and the color palette is soft and bright pinks, soft lime green, and white.  Here are a couple of shots of the whole room from the door.

I painted the dresser white and added the branch drawer pulls, and the sign was one I did in my pre-Silhouette days.  I printed the letters out on a piece of paper, cut the letters out, traced them onto the blank pink sign, and painstakingly painted in the letters.  It was quite the process.  Projects like this are ones I look back on and think, I am so glad I have a Silhouette.

The toddler bed is just an old dropside crib with the dropside taken off.  It works for now, at least until we can build her a twin-sized bed.  I made the collages above the crib with scrapbook papers, and they are hung a bit higher on the wall so she can't knock them down onto herself.

The felt bird mobile was another gift from grandma.  She did a great job with it, and Molly just loves her birds.

This little area is a newer part of the room, since we needed better toy and book storage once my baby was no longer a baby anymore.  I got the white shelves at IKEA and the hatboxes at Downeast.

Pennant Banner

The nursery wall decor is finally complete!  I made the pennant banner with our baby's name a couple of weeks ago, and I just barely got around to hanging it today.  I also hung four 8"x10" photos that we took and had printed.  You can see a couple of them in the photo above and in the last photo. 

For the pennants, I used fabric remnants from her quilt and car seat canopy.  Each piece was ironed onto fusible interfacing for sturdiness, both visual and physical.  I used heat-transfer vinyl with flocking for the letters.  It was my first experience using it, and it was super easy to cut the letters on my Silhouette and iron them onto the fabric.  The edges were trimmed with pinking shears, then all the pieces were sewn onto a long piece of brown satin ribbon.  I really love how it turned out, and it fills in that wall very nicely.

My mom found some flowers for the awesome yellow vase that I got at IKEA.  I finally feel like the little details are finished!

Changing Pad Covers

When we got our changing table, the pad that came with it was boring, white, and plastic-y.  Waterproof, yes; but stylish, no.  I had some baby print flannel on hand, so I thought I would see what I could do with that.

Luckily, I had just enough to fit the changing pad perfectly.  It was seriously meant to be.  I used a yard of flannel and four buttons to make a sort-of duvet cover for the pad.

Since I have already had a baby, I knew that I would want an extra to have on hand.  I also had a yard of this flannel in my fabric:

This is one of the last projects that I had planned for the new baby!  Now I am not quite sure what to do with myself.

Pennant Wall Art

We hung the pennant wall art that I made for the baby's room, and it looks fab!  

The stripes are painted, the flags are scrapbook paper, and the strings are ribbons.  The paper gives it a lot of dimension, and the ribbon adds some fun texture.  The room feels a lot more complete on that side as well.

Nursery Update

The walls are painted, the glider is here, the artwork is done, the curtains and lamp are hung, the crib and changing table are all set up, the quilt is finished, and the fabric boxes are made.

Here is a peek at the flag artwork I did.  There are four canvases in all, and they will be hung on the opposite wall above the changing table.

This is a better view of the quilt my mom made.  (Thanks, Mom!)  It was the inspiration for the flag/pennant theme.

Here is the glider we got with the felt ruffle pillow I made a while ago.  The pendant light, other pillow, and curtains are from IKEA.

This is the (unorganized) changing table with all the fabric boxes I made.  They still need to be filled with all the baby stuff.

Here's a shot from the door.  The circular cream rug is also from IKEA.

All in all, I believe it's coming together very nicely.  There are still a few more things I want to do:

1. Hang the flag artwork
2. Hang another sign I already have
3. Get some big flowers for the empty yellow vase
4. Organize changing table
5. Make changing table pad covers
6. Make a pennant banner with baby's name (This one will have to wait until after the baby is born, since we haven't picked a name yet)

I feel much better about the room than I did before we painted.  The color was hard to photograph, but it is a soft aqua blue (Mystic Sea by Valspar), and it turned out perfectly!
